Cowboys & Aliens |
Director: Jon Favreau
Stars: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures
The Plot: In Silver City, Arizona, Apache Indians and Western settlers must lay their differences aside when an alien spaceship crash lands in their city.
THE BUZZ: No offense to anything in the Tony Stark world, but we became most interested in this sci-fi/western when Robert Downey Jr. stepped away from the project and Good Ol' Daniel Craig came aboard for Sheriff Jon Favreau. Surrounding Craig with Sam Rockwell, Harrison Ford, Paul Dano, Clancy Brown, and Keith Carradine? Such a cast could start a neo-Western revolution. Also, with a screenplay by "Lost"'s Damon Lindelof and the Roberto Orci/Alex Kurtzman enterprise, this could be the first time a blockbuster earns an Oscar nomination for writing. Scratch that: we just saw the film at Comic-Con, and while the acting and directing is great, the story is beyond simple and nowhere near the genre reinvention we expected.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. |
Director: Glenn Ficarra John Requa
Stars: Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures
The Plot: After his wife (Julianne Moore) reveals that she's been unfaithful and wants a divorce, family man Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) re-enters the single world as protégé to a thirtysomething player (Ryan Gosling).
THE BUZZ: Sound funny to you? Well, we hear both Carell and Gosling have never been more comedic (well, Gosling has only had the chance to be creepy-funny) than in this script by getting-hot Dan Fogelman. With this cast, concept, and a major studio behind them, may we finally see the full promise of co-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Bad Santa, I Love You Phillip Morris). Funny how the potential Santa sequel is back in the news, with dueling scripts being written at the moment.

The Smurfs |
Director: Raja Gosnell
Stars: Hank Azaria, Katy Perry, Jonathan Winters (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures
The Plot: The little blue creatures of Smurf village move to New York City after the evil wizard Gargamel chases them out of their mushroom-like homes in the forest.
THE BUZZ: This CGI update to the Saturday morning cartoon staple with a cast straight out of a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards show stands a good chance of reviving the trend of randomly replacing every word possible with variations of the word "smurf". Our current favorite? Crazy, Stupid, Smurf.

Attack the Block |
Director: Joe Cornish
Stars: John Boyega, Jodie Whittaker, Alex Esmail (Full Cast)
Studio: Screen Gems
The Plot: Moses (John Boyega) and the rest of his teen gang look to protect Wyndham Tower -- their housing estate -- from an alien invasion.
THE BUZZ: A late entry to the summer movie season, comedian-turned-filmmaker Joe Cornish's debut was, in all honesty, the talk of South by Southwest earlier this year, but we don't think this is a simple case of festival hype failing to generate mainstream interest. The main question is whether or not Screen Gems will subtitle the heavily accented proceedings -- or use dubbing (ugh!). A question for hipsters: Does this look like Odd Future: The Movie to you?

The Future [limited] |
Director: Miranda July
Stars: Miranda July, Hamish Linklater, David Warshofsky (Full Cast)
Studio: Roadside Attractions
The Plot: When a couple (July and Linklater) decides to adopt a stray cat their perspective on life changes radically, literally altering the course of time and space and testing their faith in each other and themselves.
THE BUZZ: Miranda July's second film freezes time, engages an unlikely affair, and, as you might have heard, it is narrated by a cat named Paw-Paw (voiced by July). Her gutsy style turns what might otherwise be a string of indie-film clichés into something sublime and effecting.

The Devil's Double [limited] |
Director: Lee Tamahori
Stars: Dominic Cooper, Ludivine Sagnier, Raad Rawi (Full Cast)
Studio: Herrick Entertainment
The Plot: Forced to become the body double of Uday Hussein, Latif Ahmed (Cooper) bears witness to daily life under Saddam Hussein's reign, from lavish extravagances to sadistic acts of brutality.
THE BUZZ: Despite terrific performances from Dominic Cooper (in a much-discussed dual role) and Ludivine Sagnier and a sense of historical voyeurism that's confirming and wildly over-the-top in places, the problem here is the presence of Lee Tamahori, whose one-dimensional direction does this film a major disservice (perhaps it's been re-edited a bit since we saw it at Sundance). That said, Dominic Cooper's work more than earns the cost of admission.

Director: John Michael McDonagh
Stars: Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle, Mark Strong (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics
The Plot: An unorthodox Irish cop (Brendan Gleeson) is paired with a straight-laced FBI agent (Don Cheadle) to investigate an international drug-smuggling ring.
THE BUZZ: Honored as the opening film at Sundance 2011, John Michael McDonagh (brother of In Bruges's writer-director, Martin) sends up the cop-movie genre with ounces of drugs and liquor and an arsenal of jokes about race. The result is undeniably funny stuff that gets better as the story progresses. Cheadle is note-perfect as the straight man, but the spotlight is on Gleeson, whose performance traffics in bits of classic Benny Hill.

Director: Kevin Macdonald Natalia Andreadis
Stars: (Full Cast)
Studio: National Geographic Entertainment
The Plot: A documentary shot by people all over the world that serves as a time capsule to show future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010.
THE BUZZ: I am thoroughly intrigued by this crowd-sourced human-nature documentary overseen by Ridley Scott and directed by Kevin Macdonald, who is solid in feature mode (The Last King of Scotland, even The Eagle was B-quality) but truly comes alive when examining the real world (Touching the Void, and the Oscar-winning One Day in September).

Director: Joe Johnston Stars: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L. Jackson (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: After being deemed unfit for military service during WWII, Steve Rogers (Evans) volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, the Sentinel of Liberty -- a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals. His first mission: to combat the Nazi propaganda effort headed by Johann Schmidt (Weaving), also known as the Red Skull. User Rating: THE BUZZ: While Captain America might not possess any superpowers, his origin story is one of the more interesting tales in the Marvel Universe. Director Joe Johnson promises a faithful starting point that will lead in new, original directions, and while normally that'd give us pause, we're .... um .... trailing off and thinking about ... how awesome it's going to be to catch our first look at The Avengers after Captain's end credits!

But when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the battle we've all known has been coming -- Harry vs. Voldemort -- looms large on the horizon. And who will triumph? User Rating: THE BUZZ: Yes, it's taken ten years (!) and eight (!!) movies to reach the final climax to the Harry Potter film series, so let's take a moment to reflect upon the unprecendented achievement made by the filmmakers, cast, crew and studio, and the commitment everyone has made for the past decade to get this body of work made. Director: Will Gluck Stars: Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake, Patricia Clarkson (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: While trying to avoid the clichés of Hollywood romantic comedies, Dylan (Timberlake) and Jamie (Kunis) soon discover however that adding the act of sex to their friendship does in fact lead to complications. User Rating: THE BUZZ: We've been quietly amazed by Mila Kunis's transition from TV star to supporting actress on the big screen, and now she and JT combine their powers as they both make their leading-role debuts in director Will Gluck's follow-up to Easy A. Both performers are effortlessly funny, and all that ho-hum talk about how 2011 is the year of the friends-with-benefits comedy is just frustrated blogger runoff. If the entire film is half as enjoyable as the trailer, this could be the yet another hugely successful R-rated comedy of the season -- even if you can telegraph the ending from the concession stand. Director: Michael Bay Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tyrese Gibson (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: Against the backdrop of the space race between the U.S.S.R. and the USA, the alliance between Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) and Optimus Prime is put to the test against a common enemy: Shockwave. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Remember when Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich each had some sort of identity crisis and pledged to make smaller movies outside of the action genre? Emmerich managed to break free, at least for one project, and we'll see his curious looking political thriller Anonymous later this year, but Bay couldn't say no to a third Transformers movie and the promise of worldwide domination it guarantees. The funny thing for us here: This is the first time we're anticipating a Transformers storyline, if only to discover what happens to Mikaela Banes. And let's see if Bay makes good on his promise to delve deeper into the toy line's mythos, while exploring darker emotional realms of his human characters as well. Director: Seth Gordon Stars: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: Three friends (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis) make a pact to rid the world of their respective bosses.
User Rating: THE BUZZ: This script has been around for a few years (Frank Oz was attached to direct at one point), but the project ramped up after hot writing team John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (they have Burt Wonderstone and a handful of other projects in development) reworked the screenplay and director Seth Gordon (The King of Kong, Four Christmases) signed on. Then came stars such as Kevin Spacey -- earning comparisons to Swimming with Sharks -- and Jennifer Aniston, who plays a scheming, foul-mouthed dentist. Will this be a guy version of 9 to 5? Director: Frank Coraci Stars: Kevin James, Rosario Dawson, Leslie Bibb (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: A group of zoo animals decide to break their code of silence in order to help their lovable zookeeper (Kevin James) find romance. The trick is: getting him to remain at the zoo instead of looking for a "better" job. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Animals helping a blue-collar guy hook up sounds like Madagascar meets Hitch meets a little bit of creepiness (and seriously bad luck), but if Kevin James charts another hit (especially with families), our favorite husky celebrity might start competing with Adam Sandler for roles. As the action revs up, Mater becomes involved in an adventure of his own: a case of international espionage that will take him across Europe and into Japan. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Race fans have been quick to call out Pixar and Disney for selling out, but who were all those people who snapped up Cars merchandise -- a major factor in the greenlighting of this sequel? Though this is arguably the first bonafide family movie of the season, we're curious as to why Pixar felt the need to announce a new, mysterious project this week ... Then again, box-office predictions are up in the air now that Green Lantern underperformed and Bridesmaids has become the season's most enduring release. Message Boards: 6.6... User Rating: THE BUZZ: Five stories from A.A. Milne are given the hand-drawn Disney treatment in the studio's return to Hundred Acre Wood. Keeping the project relatively celebrity-free is commendable, perhaps an acknowledgment that storytelling is the star here. Said differently, bringing Winnie, Eeyore, et al. back into theaters in classical fashion could be construed as an indication that Disney is aware of how poorly their non-Pixar animated movies have performed of late. Director: Jake Kasdan Stars: Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Justin Timberlake (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: When thoroughly unprofessional school teacher Elizabeth Halsey (Cameron Diaz) is dumped by her fiancé, she sets her sights on a new meal ticket: substitute teacher Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake). Formulating a plan that involves her wits and well as her students, she finds herself facing off against her colleague, the beloved Amy Squirrel (Lucy Punch). User Rating: THE BUZZ: Personally, after Bridesmaids and The Hangover Part II, a break from hard-R comedy wouldn't be so bad. However, I expect a torrent of nasty one-liners will serve as Cameron D's best-received on-screen role since ... yikes ... let's just say I'm looking forward to her next project, the Gambit remake penned by the Coen Bros. Jake Kasdan has the experience (he's directed Walk Hard and Orange County) but I don't think he's made a great comedy yet, and screenwriting team Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky didn't make the most hilarious transition from the small-screen ("The Office") to the big (Year One). While I've been waiting for a high-school comedy that focuses more on teachers than students, the redband trailer's humor feels a bit forced and, frankly, Justin Timberlake's character seems piped in from another dimension. Director: Woody Allen Stars: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: While in Paris, blocked writer Gil (Owen Wilson) retreats from his fiancée (Rachel McAdams) and her parents and is drawn into a mysterious adventure rooted in the City of Lights' artistic history. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Only in Woody Allen's movie world does an entire family travel to Paris on a business trip. But it appears that his latest European jaunt has a series of welcome surprises; mainly, the historic figures encountered by Owen Wilson's Gil. Bummer that Rachel McAdams is playing an unlikable character -- someone needs a breezy adult comedy, stat! |
